| A Bit Of History
In the authors' words, the Unix name originated as "A weak pun on Multics" having originally christen it 'UNICS' (see http://info.astrian.net/jargon/terms/u/Unix.html). UNICS stood for UNiplexed Information and Computing Service, a pun on the Multics (Multiplexed Information and Computing Service) operating system, which Thompson and Ritchie were previously involved with.
